Description
A Tapered Flanged Thermowell is a protective fitting designed to house RTDs, Pt100 sensors, thermocouples, and other industrial temperature sensors while isolating them from direct contact with the process medium. Compared with a straight-stem thermowell, a tapered design is engineered to improve mechanical performance in flowing services by increasing stiffness near the process connection while reducing the stem diameter toward the tip.
The Aavad Instrument Tapered Flanged Thermowell (Model TW-F-TAP-1.5″) is manufactured from SS316 stainless steel and features a 1.5-inch Raised Face (RF) flange, a 25 mm root diameter, a 16 mm tip diameter, a 100 mm taper length, and a 200 mm U-length. It is suitable for process temperatures up to 500°C and is designed for installation in pipelines, reactors, pressure vessels, boilers, and process equipment requiring a flanged connection.
The tapered stem geometry provides a larger cross-section near the flange, where bending stresses are highest, while reducing the exposed area toward the tip. In applications involving significant fluid flow, thermowell suitability should be evaluated using engineering methods such as ASME PTC 19.3 TW-2016, which considers wake frequency, natural frequency, and flow-induced vibration. A tapered profile is commonly selected because it can improve performance under these conditions compared with an equivalent straight-stem design.
The 1.5-inch RF flanged connection provides a secure, leak-resistant installation and allows the RTD or thermocouple to be removed for calibration or replacement without removing the thermowell from the process. This reduces maintenance time and minimizes process interruptions.
The thermowell is compatible with RTDs, Pt100 sensors, Pt1000 sensors, and thermocouples, making it suitable for demanding temperature measurement applications in power generation, oil & gas, petrochemical processing, chemical manufacturing, refineries, and other industrial environments.
