Description
A Taper Thermowell is a protective fitting designed to house RTDs, Pt100 sensors, thermocouples, and other industrial temperature sensors while shielding them from direct exposure to high-pressure, high-temperature, corrosive, and flowing process media. The tapered stem profile improves mechanical performance in flowing services, making it a preferred choice for applications where vibration and process flow must be considered during thermowell selection.
The Aavad Instrument Taper Thermowell (Model TW-TAPPER) is manufactured from SS316 stainless steel and features an M33×2 threaded process connection, making it suitable for European-standard process equipment, OEM machinery, turbines, compressors, and industrial systems where metric threaded connections are specified.
The thermowell incorporates a tapered stem geometry, reducing the outside diameter from 25 mm at the root to 16 mm at the tip over a 100 mm taper length, with a 200 mm immersion length. Compared with a straight-stem thermowell of similar tip diameter, this tapered design helps improve stiffness near the process connection while reducing hydrodynamic loading toward the tip. For applications where thermowell vibration analysis is required, designs should be evaluated in accordance with ASME PTC 19.3 TW-2016 to confirm suitability for the intended operating conditions.
Unlike flanged thermowells, the M33×2 threaded connection provides a compact installation with lower installation cost and reduced space requirements while still allowing convenient removal for inspection or sensor replacement. This makes the thermowell well suited for high-velocity pipelines, compressors, turbines, power plants, petrochemical facilities, and other industrial processes using threaded process connections.
The thermowell protects RTDs, Pt100 sensors, Pt1000 sensors, and thermocouples from mechanical damage and process exposure while allowing maintenance without replacing the process connection.

FAQs
1. What is a Taper Thermowell?
A Taper Thermowell is a protective fitting with a tapered stem designed to house industrial temperature sensors such as RTDs, Pt100 sensors, Pt1000 sensors, and thermocouples. The tapered profile provides excellent mechanical strength while reducing drag forces, making it suitable for high-pressure and flowing process applications.
2. Why is a Tapered Thermowell used?
A tapered thermowell gradually reduces material toward the tip while maintaining maximum strength near the process connection. This design minimizes flow-induced forces and is commonly selected for applications involving higher flow velocities, elevated pressures, and vibration-sensitive installations. It is often evaluated using ASME PTC 19.3 TW-2016 wake frequency calculations to ensure safe operation.
3. What is the advantage of an M33×2 Threaded Connection?
The M33×2 metric thread is widely used on European-designed industrial equipment, turbines, compressors, and OEM machinery. It provides a compact, secure, and leak-resistant process connection without requiring a flange, ensuring easy installation and compatibility with existing equipment.
4. What is the key advantage of a Threaded Tapered Thermowell over a Flanged Tapered Thermowell?
A Threaded Tapered Thermowell (Model TW-TAPPER) provides the same ASME PTC 19.3 TW-2016 wake frequency and vibration resistance benefits as a flanged tapered thermowell while requiring significantly less installation space. It eliminates the cost of flanges, studs, bolts, and gaskets, allowing quick installation into tapped bosses on compact turbine casings, compressors, process skids, and OEM equipment.
5. Why is M33×2 Metric Threading preferred for High-Velocity Machinery?
The M33×2 metric thread features a 33 mm major diameter with a fine 2 mm thread pitch, providing greater shear strength and improved resistance to vibration loosening compared with smaller pipe threads such as NPT. These characteristics make it a preferred choice for European turbines, high-pressure compressors, heavy industrial plant skids, rotating machinery, and high-flow process applications.
