Description
MI Thermocouple is a premium Mineral Insulated (MI) Duplex K-Type Thermocouple designed for reliable temperature measurement in demanding industrial environments where long insertion lengths, flexible routing, and high measurement reliability are required. With an impressive 2650 mm insertion length, this thermocouple is ideal for deep process vessels, furnaces, boilers, reactors, turbines, exhaust systems, and applications where conventional rigid sensors cannot be easily installed.
The thermocouple utilizes Mineral Insulated (MI) technology, where the thermoelectric conductors are enclosed within an SS316 stainless steel sheath and surrounded by highly compacted magnesium oxide (MgO) insulation. This construction provides outstanding mechanical strength, excellent electrical insulation, rapid heat transfer, and superior resistance to vibration, pressure, and harsh industrial environments.
One of the key advantages of this MI thermocouple is its fully annealed flexible sheath, which allows the sensor to be carefully bent into custom shapes with a minimum bend radius of approximately twice the sheath diameter. This enables easy installation around structural obstacles, through narrow passages, and into difficult-to-access temperature measurement locations without compromising sensor performance.
The duplex K-Type construction incorporates two independent sensing elements within a single probe. This allows simultaneous temperature monitoring, redundant measurements for enhanced process safety, or connection to separate control and monitoring systems from one installation point, minimizing process penetrations and reducing installation costs.
Key Features
-
Dual-Element Duplex Wiring Configuration Provides built-in loop redundancy or secondary output signals for independent data logging and automation control.
-
Malleable Fully Annealed SS316 Sheath Allows the long 2650 mm probe to be custom bent on-site around physical obstructions without fracturing the internal insulation.
-
High-Density Compacted MgO Powder Maximizes thermal energy transfer from the outer pipe wall to the junction tip, yielding highly responsive readings.
-
Extended 2650 mm Insertion Capability Aavad’s longest standard MI footprint, optimized for deep storage silos, wide flue runs, and heavy machinery bays.
-
Sliding Adjustable 1/2″ BSP Fitting Simplifies structural installation by allowing operators to lock the sensor depth tightly at any point along the shaft.
-
Standardized K-Type Chromel/Alumel Core Delivers globally linear, predictable millivolt signals matching modern industrial controllers.
-
Weatherproof IP65 Aluminum Termination Head Heavy-walled die-cast metal box keeps ambient moisture, steam, and airborne oils away from the termination screws.
-
High Physical Integrity and Crush Resistance Solid mineral-filled interior survives high-pressure lines and strong process vibrations better than standard hollow sensors.
Applications
-
Obstructed Boiler and Steam Turbine Routing Running long instrumentation lines around high-pressure steam pipes, headers, and turbine casings.
-
Chemical Reactors and Deep Hydrocarbon Stacks Multi-point or redundant center-stream temperature profiling across tall distillation columns and gas flues.

FAQs
1. What is an MI Thermocouple?
An MI (Mineral Insulated) Thermocouple is a temperature sensor in which the thermocouple wires are enclosed inside a stainless steel sheath filled with highly compacted magnesium oxide (MgO) insulation. This construction provides excellent mechanical strength, superior electrical insulation, fast thermal response, high vibration resistance, and long service life in demanding industrial applications.
2. Why choose a Mineral Insulated Thermocouple?
Mineral Insulated Thermocouples are highly flexible, vibration-resistant, pressure-resistant, and capable of operating in harsh industrial environments. Their bendable construction allows easy installation in confined spaces, complex routing paths, and applications requiring long insertion lengths while maintaining accurate and reliable temperature measurement.
3. Why use a Duplex MI Thermocouple?
A Duplex MI Thermocouple contains two independent sensing elements inside a single stainless steel sheath. This enables redundant temperature measurement, simultaneous monitoring and control, or backup sensing without requiring an additional process connection, thereby improving system reliability and minimizing maintenance downtime.
